Chapter 13

“So when do you think we’ll be able to see Bianca?” I trace a circle pattern on my kitchen island with my index finger, cell phone pinned to my left ear as I talk to Cora.

It’s been a day and half since Bianca was rushed to the hospital and operated on. She’s pulled through the surgery but remains unconscious. A thick lump swells in my throat when thinking of the possible outcomes.

Bianca might not remember us. There’s even a higher chance of her losing the ability to speak and walk.

A sweep of nausea overtakes my stomach and I inch away the full wine glass near my hand. Pouring the merlot sounded like a good idea, something to stamp out the untouchable anxiety. It’s better to leave it untouched.

Alcohol is never the answer. It was a mistake Mae did by clutching to it all those years ago. That’s how she coped after Mom died. I don’t even want to start down that precarious slope. Not to mention nothing will change once the high is gone. All the ugly memories and realities will still be here in the morning, waiting for me.

Cora harrumps through the phone, breaking me from my daze. “Shit if I know. I’m beginning to think Brett is a guard dog and not her boyfriend. He hasn’t let us see her at all.”

“He’s in love with her.” I stare blankly at the red liquid I’ve just shoved to the side. “You can’t fault him for wanting to protect her.”

“No. I guess not.” The reply is less than enthused. “But holy fucking hell. We’re not banshees that are gonna drain her soul and smother her with the hospital pillow. We’re her friends.”

I sigh, my shoulders aching from the weight resting on them. How strange that the invisible things in life threaten to be the most crushing. “Give it time. He’s a terrified alpha male afraid of losing who he loves the most.”

“Alpha male? Brett Walker?” She snorts. “What gave you that impression?”

My heart lightens some. “Nice infusion of humor. Also, you’re too much.” The phone pulses with another call coming in. Pulling it away to glance at the screen, unease takes hold. Mae. Tonight of all nights. I’m in no state to deal with anything.

My eyes are red rimmed from crying over Bianca, I haven’t showered since that night, and my food intake has been low, possibly nil.

A delayed grief reaction that found me after I was alone.

“Earth to Liz!” Cora’s call to attention hits the air. “Are you alive?”

“Yeah. Sorry. I have to—” I jump when my phone vibrates once more. Mae hung up and is calling again.. She’s fallen. No question about it. Wonderful. “I have to go, Cora.”

“Hey, wait—”

I switch the call over, guilt raking me for refusing to tell Cora what’s been going on with Mae. After telling her how my parents died, I’m sure she’d like to know. But it would be so embarrassing. I can’t deal with that at the moment.

“Yes, Mae?” I grip the phone tighter, knowing what to expect but hoping that’s not the case.
